Brief Professional Sketch:

My areas of research are political communication and media effects, which I largely define as analyzing the effect media messages have on the perception of people of color and other traditionally marginalized groups. My articles have appeared in Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, the flagship journal for AEJMC, the Howard Journal of Communications, which is one of the few journals that focuses exclusively on issues pertaining to African Americans, and I currently have several articles that are in the process of being submitted to leading communication journals and one to the Journal of Health Communication.

In addition to my research, I am an award-winning teacher having been named the 2013-2014 College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award winner. The award is the only entirely student-nominated award at The Ohio State University for which I was selected from more than 1,000 professors in the College of Arts and Sciences for this honor. I am the first person to win this award from either the School of Journalism or School of Communication since 1948, and likely the first person in the history of The Ohio State University to win it in their first year teaching at OSU. I have also earned teaching awards at my alma mater, Indiana University, where I taught in both the journalism and business programs, as well as at Butler University where I taught public relations.

Personal:

I am relatively new to Columbus having only been here since July 2013. In a past life – very past if you see me trying it now – I ran track for the University of Minnesota, competing in the 400 meters. My hobbies include running (when healthy), reading up on and watching programs about planetary science; trivia – especially Jeopardy, watching track and field, sci-fi movies, and the three major sports: football, basketball, and baseball. I especially love college football!

My favorite sports teams are:
NFL: 49ers
NBA: Celtics
MLB: White Sox
College football: Ohio State Buckeyes and Miami Hurricanes
College basketball: Indiana Hoosiers, but I'm trying to warm up to OSU basketball.

...and oh yeah, I cannot stomach the Chicago Cubs, Notre Dame, and the New England Patriots.

My family and I also have two cats, one loves me and everyone else; the other... well, she lets me feed her.
