Profile
My primary teaching areas are communication law and news reporting. I am chair of the School Publications Committee and faculty adviser to the OSU Chapter of Kappa Tau Alpha, the honorary for journalism students. I am a member of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, American Journalism Historians Association and International Communication Association. I am also the editor of the journal, Communication Law and Policy.

My research interests embrace communication law and history. I have a long-standing interest in how the U.S. Supreme Court interprets the First Amendment. Recent projects have addressed South African freedom of expression, journalists' attitudes toward libel law, and Progressive era journalism.

I'm a proud native of St. Paul, Minnesota, but I'm glad not to be there in winter. I'm passionate about the Minnesota Twins, the television series Law and Order, and shrimp (not necessarily in that order). I live in a Clintonville house, which, if you know the general state and age of houses in that area, gives you an idea of what I do with my spare time and money. Lyn, my personable daughter, lives with me and works at AT&T wireless in the Polaris area. My favorite quote: "Rome didn't burn in a day." (Bill McNeal, "The Real Deal With Bill McNeal")
