My research is based on cognitive approaches to the study of media and communication technologies. I am working on various intervention projects that focus on body image, weight loss, physical activity, and cancer prevention and treatment. Two common themes the run through these projects is the use of technology as an agent and the use of longitudinal data. Given this interest, in much of my current research ecological momentary assessments are used to collect data in real time and tailored intervention messages are also delivered in real time. Mobile technologies, such as the cell phone and the PDA, are employed in conjunction with the Internet for real time data collection and intervention delivery.

I am also interested in message design issues involving both form and content. In terms of content, I am intrigued by the power of first-person testimonial accounts and its impact in health interventions. At the same time, I am deeply interested in various aspects of visual and multimedia aesthetics. More generally, some of my current research on design focuses on how to use enjoyment and the game-playing metaphor in health and education.

I teach courses in visual communication, multimedia design and social marketing. I am lucky because I get to show students how to be creative by simply playing with software. In my classes, I nurture curiosity and a drive for lifelong learning.
