Profile
My teaching specialty is the history of newspaper cartoons, both political cartoons and comic strips. What I hope students will remember about my classes is that they learned a new understanding and appreciation of a part of the mass media that they took for granted.
My research interests mirror my teaching, with my primary interest in the history of political cartooning. I see what I do as history, and the cartoons as reflecting the social and political history of the era. I do not draw or create cartoons.
I have two adult daughters. My older daughter is in graduate school at Princeton, doing a Ph.D. in comparative literature. The younger one lives in New York City and works with New York Cares, a non-profit that matches corporate volunteers with non-profits needing assistance. I like to cook. I also enjoy traveling--but not trekking or camping. My idea of a vacation is to visit a major urban center and enjoy music, theatre, and museums.
