Profile
I teach courses on mass communication theory and effects and children and the mass media. I like to get students involved in class discussions. In particular, I hope they will critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the theories I introduce on theoretical, logical, and practical grounds. I hope that students who take my classes will gain an appreciation of the applicability of theory to the real world.

I study mass communication and am especially interested in how children use and are affected by the mass media. My research on parental mediation explores how parent-child interaction (including parents' communication practices) shapes media effects among children. Most recently I have studied the effect of parental mediation on children's responses to violent television and programs containing gender stereotypes, the relative influence of parent and peer mediation of television, and how children interpret their parents' mediation messages. One of my on-going interests is in developing an explanation for why certain forms of parental mediation are associated with specific outcomes.
