Overview
A Fresh Perspective Recent convergence
of media and communication technologies has provided a host of new
ideas and reminded us of some very basic tenets regarding the
blurring of boundaries between mass and interpersonal
communication. Although the field has progressed as if these two
types of communication could be understood as separate processes, an
examination of our daily lives shows us that we integrate what we learn
from multiple channels, whether from interpersonal, organizational,
mass or some technological hybrid – a telephone or a computer.
An Integrated Perspective The School of
Communication at The Ohio State University offers a Ph.D. in
communication and an M.A. in Communication representing the state of
the art in a rapidly changing field. Our program takes a fresh look at
the communication process, seamlessly integrating mass and
interpersonal communication for a broader theoretical inquiry and
application.
A Social Science Perspective Strongly
rooted in the social sciences, our program is appropriately located
within the university's College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. With
nationally ranked programs in areas such as psychology, political
science, and sociology, the College provides a stimulating intellectual
environment for pursuing graduate studies.
An Interdisciplinary Perspective Our
faculty's interdisciplinary approach to the study of communication
gives students a broader appreciation of a range of factors affecting
the communication process. While some of our faculty members hold joint
appointments in other departments across the university, others are
involved in various interdisciplinary research centers, such as the
Center for Cognitive Science; University Technology Services; and the
Center for Health Outcomes, Policy and Evaluation Studies.
An Applied Perspective In addition to
theoretical research, we encourage a symbiotic relationship between
theory and application. Applied communication research can have a
positive impact on society and is an integral part of our
program. In particular, our program offers the chance to study in
such areas as communication technology, political communication, health
communication, public opinion, strategic communication, journalism and
society.
